the unposed portrait
My approach to wedding photography is documentary—nothing staged, nothing forced. The only time I step in is for a few formal family portraits or some relaxed couple photos if you’d like them. Otherwise, I focus on capturing the day as it unfolds, letting real moments shine.
One of the things I really enjoy is when a fleeting, candid moment comes together so perfectly that it almost looks posed. With the right timing, patience, observation and framing, these natural, unposed portraits never fail to make me smile because they show people just as they are, in the most genuine way.
As you can see, many of those portraits arise from my presence being noticed. Something that I come across at many weddings is that the couple tell their guests about my candid style, and then they laugh because they’ve noticed me and then try to ignore me!
If someone looks at me because I am there, this is completely natural and produces some wonderful pictures. For me, documentary style means I just don’t tell you what to do, and if someone happens to pose for the camera then that is what I capture. I have years of photos of people doing a Ben Stiller “blue steel” at me!
